Classification in compliance with norms:
ČSN EN 61643-11…….type 3
IEC 61643-1…………….class III
VDE 0675-6…………….class D

Surge protection protects the connected devices against pulse overvoltage using varistors, which resistance falls with increasing voltage.

Rating voltage Un250VAC 50/60Hz
Maximum persist working voltage300VAC
Standard discharge current (8/20?s)5kA
Nominal discharge current (8/20 ?s)10kA
Residual voltage (8/20 ?s)<1000V
Response time<25ns
Maximum working current16A

Varistor protection used in the RAB-PD-X08-A1 power distribution panels as the 3rd level of overvoltage protection in compliance with appropriate norm, accordingly as a protection placed right in front of the device and eliminating the remnant voltage, which the previous steps of house wiring surge protection failed to break off. The installed surge protection is in form of detachable block, which can discharge the pulse overvoltage and endanger the devices connected to the protective earth conductor. Therefore, it only operates on the so-called three wire distribution system with yellow-green protective conductor. If the overvoltage is really large, the surge protection module would get damaged and the control green light on the module would go out. The power distribution panel would still be working, however, it would no longer protects against the overvoltage and it is necessary to replace the surge protection module.

1. Compliance with European standards (CE)

All PDU units are designed and manufactured in accordance with the relevant harmonized European Union legislation, in particular the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2014/35/EU). The devices are designed to be completely safe for the end user regardless of the polarity of the phase conductor in the power supply network, which is a basic requirement for the free movement of goods within the unified European market.

2. Statement on the placement of the phase conductor (L) and neutral conductor (N)

In connection with installation in the Czech Republic and the requirements of the ČSN 33 2130 ed. 4 standard (and the related ČSN 33 2000-4-46 standard):

  • Preference of the Czech market: For PDUs intended primarily for the Czech market (equipped with type E sockets with pins), the preferred connection during manufacture is to connect the phase conductor to the left side (when viewed from the front, with the grounding pin at the top).
  • Technical compatibility: Due to the integration of modern protective elements and the use of universal power supply systems (compatibility with the Schuko/Type F system), PDUs are technically independent of side polarity.
  • Safety standard: The fact that in some types of PDUs (especially international versions or units with double-sided plugs) the phase may not be strictly on the left side does not conflict with safety or applicable electrical regulations. The modern ČSN standard no longer strictly prescribes the position of the phase as exclusive (it lists it as recommended), provided that the integrity of the protective conductor (PE) and the uniformity of the wiring throughout the device are maintained.

3. Conclusion

PDU units are fully certified for operation in both TN-S and TN-C-S networks. Protection against electric shock is ensured by the design of the device, insulation, and correct connection of the protective conductor (grounding), which is always in accordance with protection class I standards.
